Summary

Spensa lives in a world where being a pilot is the highest honor anyone could ever have. Their planet, Detritus, has been under attack by the fearsome Krell for decades. They’ve been on the planet for 80 years so… pretty much since then. Years ago, Spensa’s father was a talented, popular pilot for the government, the DDF. That is until he fled like a coward from a fight.

Now Spensa has to prove that she’s not like her father. She’s not a coward. It was difficult to become a pilot and now her chances were even smaller. As she goes through the struggles of living in her father’s shadow and trying to live her dream, she discovers a cave that holds something that may help her achieve all of her goals. For most of her life, Spensa lived in her father’s shadow. She may now have a chance to break out of it.

Opinion

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Wow…. just… WOW! This was such an amazing book. I honestly have absolutely no complaints about it. The way Brandon Sanderson immerses people in his stories absolutely blows my mind. I’ve read almost all of Brandon Sanderson’s books and almost all of them are this good. Honestly, this book took me for a whirlwind of emotions. The way he built up even the side characters is just so marvelous! I honestly don’t know how much more I can hype this book up more.

One thing I really appreciated was the unique relationships that Spensa had with each character. There were many endearing moments between her and Cobb, her father’s former friend. It’s definitely a father-daughter dynamic that always gets me right in the feels and I’m all here for it! I love the times when they’re bouncing off one another in conversation until they’re just fed up with each other. But, ultimately, though they irritate one another at times, it’s amazing to see how they care about one another throughout all the setbacks that Spensa deals with.

The humor in this book was very on point with my kind of humor. There were some dry and sarcastic comments by a couple of characters that honestly had me cackling to myself. All of these characters have such distinct personalities that it’s almost impossible for there NOT to be hilarious moments between all of them!

This is a must-read for any sci-fi fan because it’s just a perfect cocktail of the genre and Brandon Sanderson’s brilliance!

Age Rating

12+

The reading level is the only thing that would probably hold back kids a bit younger than 12.

Language: These words are said a few times throughout:

  • Bastard
  • Hell
  • Damn
  • Ass

Sexual Content: There isn’t a lot of romance in this book either. The main character says that one of the other characters is attractive and there is a side character that has a girlfriend and they show small amounts of affection in public but that’s about it.

Violence: There is a lot of death in the book. There are characters that die and the main character talks about her deep sense of grief at those deaths. It’s really more emotional than graphically violent. Characters get shot at in fighter jets and some characters get shot down. Just a lot of basic fight scenes that aren’t really described too graphically
