Summary

Kenton has become the leader of the Sand Masters and it’s not going as easily as one would imagine. Many of their numbers are dead following a recent and brutal ambush. On top of that, the council that rules over them is against the continuation of the Sand Masters, saying that they have outlived their usefulness. Now, Kenton must figure out how to preserve his group.

With the help of the foreign noble, Khriss, Kenton is now having to learn how to be a diplomat, which is apparently difficult when you’re known for being a hothead… we’ll see how that turns out. Anyway, between all this and the constant flow of assassins attacking him, Kenton has his hands completely full. Things aren’t looking good for the Sand Master.

Will Kenton be able to save his group of Sand Masters? Will he be alive to even try?

Opinion

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I’m just going to start it off by saying that it was really slow-moving in the beginning. I feel like there were a lot of explaining and long-winded conversations between characters that could’ve been shorter. I get that this is an in-depth world (which is what Brandon Sanderson usually makes) but maybe it could’ve been done differently.

After a little bit, though, it got much more exciting and I was able to be invested in even the conversations that ran a bit on the long side. I like the characters that Sanderson is creating and I’m interested to see where he takes them in this story. I’m tentatively optimistic where he can take this story without breaking further into the Cosmere. I feel as though there is so much potential and hints to this story being a more relevant part of the Cosmere so hopefully we see that soon!

Other than that, this wasn’t as good as the first volume in this series but I’m hoping that the third volume is a little bit more exciting and well-executed. The story is still great and interesting, just not my absolute favorite works of his.
